Understanding the attitude of residents towards Budapest
identity
lifecycle model
problem
In honor of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Buda, Pest, and Óbuda, the Budapest History Museum aimed to curate an exhibition, presenting the authentic narratives of its contemporary citizens. The objective was to decipher the essence of being a Budapest inhabitant in 2023, to understand the elements that make up the Budapest identity (if it indeed exists), and to address the challenges that must be overcome to shape a compelling story of unity.
our work
Since there are a bunch of sociologist in our team this challenge was particularly exciting for us. Spending time on the streets, in parks, bars, buses, trams, talking to strangers with very complex and diverse identities, provided much more than just insights into what it means to live in Budapest. We dig deep into well-known phenomena such as the rural-urban divide, also the mental dimensions of district separation, and some of the Budapest-related components behind political differences.
solution
Based on our research, we identified what key characteristics distinguish Budapest residents and made suggestions on cohesion strengthening strategies. Furthermore, a lifecycle model was developed to determine what factors affect people's connection to Budapest (deepening or shallowing).
